Finding Community Under the Bridge: Projekts Skate Park

Honestly, you’d walk straight past it if you didn’t know it was there. Tucked under a railway bridge about 5-10 minutes from Manchester Piccadilly Station (depending on how quick you walk). Projekts is one of those hidden gems that feels like you’ve been let in on a secret. The second you step through the energy is brilliant. Kids flying around on scooters and boards, parents either having a go themselves or chatting over coffee like me, and people tapping away on laptops in the corner. It can get chaotic when it’s busy, but that’s the beauty of it. If you want quiet, head upstairs to the co-working space. If you want conversation and energy, stay in the café. You choose your vibe. What makes it a proper Third Place is that literally everyone fits here. And I mean everyone. Toddlers on balance bikes, kids perfecting tricks & helping each other, adults getting back into skating or just giving it a go, home ed families like us, solo workers needing somewhere with actually good coffee and WiFi (450!!!). There’s no vibe of “you don’t belong here” which is both rare and amazing. The coaches are what really make it though. They’re not just teaching kids how to drop in or land a kickflip. They have become like family. Big brothers to the kids, genuinely invested in everyone’s progress, struggles, accomplishments. They know names, celebrate wins, and create this safe space where you can just be yourself. No judgment, no pretence. Just really sound, down-to-earth people who care. For home educating parents, it’s honestly gold. Eoin gets his physical outlet, social time with other kids, and mentorship from coaches who actually care. There’s also a separate upstairs area for finger-boarding and other games, tables and chairs for kids who need a break or just want to hang out. The whole setup is so well thought out.
